Training Course. Catching up with JAWS.
Introduction.
If you are a person who chooses to upgrade your copy of JAWS on a regular basis, or maybe you've skipped an upgrade or two and you've only just purchased JAWS for Windows version 17, chances are that you may not have had time to get to grips with the latest features the screen-reader offers. While JAWS does contain good documentation, there's nothing like someone sitting down with you to explain how many of these new features work.
That's why at Hartgen Consultancy, we've created a short course to enable you to get your JAWS knowledge up-to-date. The course focuses upon the new features included with JAWS versions 16 and 17 which you may have missed out on. Purchasing JAWS is a significant investment, so it is important that you make the most of what you've paid for and that you are taught by someone who fully understands all aspects of using it. You may also be an access technology Trainer, or an I T Lecturer in a College who has a basic awareness of how JAWS works but again is not up to speed with the latest enhancements.
What You Will Learn.
This course is in two 90 minute sessions. It is designed for anyone who already understands how to use many functions of JAWS but who would like to gain a greater skill level with the latest features. The features are demonstrated with real world examples so that they make sense. There will also be plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
Topics include:
- New enhancements to the JAWS Startup Wizard.
- The benefits of Smart Navigation on the Internet.
- Enabling and Disabling Smart Navigation permanently and temporarily.
- The advantages of Semi-Auto Forms Mode.
- JAWS Command Search.
- Enhancements within Microsoft Office 2016;
- Working with Virtual Desktops in Windows10;
- Working with Facebook on the internet;
- Scanning PDF files which would otherwise be in accessible;
- Using the Settings Centre to configure settings for a specific website;
- Creating domain specific scripts for a website. This topic will not teach you how to undertake the scripting, but we will walk through the mechanics of how to set up the scripts which will be active for a website. You will not need Sharepoint or access to an intranet to work through this topic;
- Other Tips and Tricks.
Course Prerequisites.
It is important that you have:
- Good keyboarding skills;
- A computer with an internet connection;
- A microphone so as to ask questions within the course;
- JAWS for Windows version 16 or 17 (you will need JAWS version 17 for a number of the topics).
The course will be delivered online via our accessible Talking Communities server. If you have not used this conferencing software before, you will receive instructions prior to the commencement of the course. This software allows for the delivery of the presentation, including the output from the JAWS screen-reading software.

What the People Say About Courses from Hartgen Consultancy.
I didn't realise how much JAWS could be customised to provide information within Microsoft Word. Excellent!
Thanks for a well presented and informative course.
On the small number of occasions where JAWS does not provide complete access to part of the program, I liked the way you were able to explain what can be done to compensate for it.
Having a blind person to train me really helped!
