LeaseyBite 25, Updating Leasey the New Way

This page contains an approximate transcript of the audio content for the LeaseyBite. For further step by step examples of how to use the Leasey features discussed, please consult the Leasey documentation.

Thank you for your interest in Leasey!

Later this week, we'll be releasing version 3.3 of Leasey, so you will be able to try out a lot of these new features for yourself, as well as continuing to enjoy the tools, utilities and services we've brought to you since the end of 2014 when Leasey first came to be.

One of the things we've focused on a great deal is the way in which you receive updates. In point of fact, generally speaking we've been praised for the way in which the updates have worked in the past, but that does not mean we shouldn't strive to do better. So, let me talk you through how updates will work in the future and I think you will be pleased with the result.

In order to get Leasey version 3.3, the new release, you will need on this occasion to download it from our website. It will not come down to you via the old update method. This is essentially a new Leasey product and with any new piece of software, the chances are that you will have to download it afresh.

Once the new version is installed, updates will be available using our new update facility. As usual, you will be advised that a new update can be downloaded, as and when they are released. This occurs when JAWS is started.

To download the update, we go to the Leasey Help menu by pressing the Leasey Key then H, and ensure we are focused in the main category list. If you are not, press Escape to return there. Locate the item, "check for Updates", and press Enter. You will be advised that the update is downloading.

As you heard, after a short pause, the update was not only downloaded, but it was automatically installed and JAWS was restarted.

This new update facility has lots of benefits for you and us.
In the past, Leasey would download an installer program, and you would need to determine into which JAWS version you wanted to install that update. There was also a need to restart the computer, or JAWS at the very least. This is now all done for you.

From our point of view, it means that if we run into a situation where only one file in Leasey needs changing, we can simply upload that file and you will get it immediately. For example, we had a situation fairly recently where Mozilla made some changes to the Thunderbird email client. Some users of older JAWS versions could not read their email messages. Having made a change, this mechanism makes it easier for us to get it to you.
Lastly, some people have said that if they've missed updating their Leasey for a while, it wasn't possible to just get the latest update. You might have to update a few times to get the latest release. We've listened carefully to that feedback, as we always try to do, and that should now be a thing of the past. When you check for updates, you should always get the latest, even if you're skipping a few builds.

To check what is new in the current update, again go to the help menu, and select, What's New. Press Enter and you can read it there.
Don't forget also there is a section in the Help categories, "Keystrokes New in This Release". Pressing Enter will give you a summary of keystroke changes or additions. And of course, because its Leasey, she won't make you remember them right now. She'll tell you what the keystrokes are, but pressing Enter on any one of them will carry out the function.

Leasey, doing her best to keep you up-to-date.
